Across the rest of the catalogue the ornament sits on an animal: a lion patterned like a carpet is still a lion. Here the pattern is the thing itself, and where an animal appears it is placed inside the pattern rather than the other way round.

The Bloomy Lotus goes furthest. There is no creature at all, only a flower built from concentric rings of petals, each ring worked in a different motif and colour range, radiating from a single point at the centre.

What is a mandala?

Worth being accurate, since the word is used loosely in decor. A mandala is a cosmogram from Hindu and Buddhist practice, a diagram of the universe organised around a centre, used as an aid to concentration and in ritual. The adult colouring boom of the 2010s pulled the form into secular use as a relaxation exercise, which is where most people now meet it.

That secular reading is what these designs belong to. They are ornamental rather than devotional, and we would not claim otherwise.

Why is rotational symmetry harder?

This is the technical difference that matters when you sit down with one. Most symmetrical designs in our range are mirrored: a piece on the left has a twin on the right, reversed. A mandala repeats by rotation instead. The motif at four o'clock recurs at eight o'clock turned through a third of a circle, and again at twelve.

The practical effect is that two pieces can carry the identical ornament at different angles and both look correct in either slot. Orientation places them, not pattern, and it is a slower kind of checking. The Bloomy Lotus is the exception in its own family: its petals mirror across a vertical axis rather than turning about the centre, so on that board left and right pieces are twins and the rotation rule does not apply.

How do people build a mandala puzzle?

Builders work outward in rings rather than inward from an edge. The centre of a mandala is the one point with no rotational twin anywhere on the board, so it can be identified with certainty, and each ring outward is a band of consistent scale and colour that can be closed before starting the next.

People also rotate the board itself as they work, turning it to bring the ring they are on to the near edge, which is not something the animal silhouettes invite.

Which mandala puzzles have animals?

The Koala Mandala and the Zen Cat both place a painted animal over a patterned ground, and both sit at 250 pieces on a 28 cm disc. The koala keeps its mandala geometric and dark, the cat replaces it with cloud and light. On top of that, the petals repeat along their bands: two pieces from the same arc carry near-identical ornament and both look correct in either slot.

The centre line and the position along the arc are what place a piece; the pattern alone will not.

How it gets built

The axis first. The pose is the whole design: nothing else in our round range shows an animal with its eyes closed, and it changes what the finished piece does on a wall.

The fur is drawn as long flowing strokes rather than as pattern, cream and white through the chest and throat, deepening to marmalade and amber across the shoulders and ears. Behind, the ground burns from magenta and coral at the sides into deep violet at the top, with small white starbursts scattered through it.

Not the same cat as our other one

Our Gentle Cat is a paisley silhouette: flat ornament, hard-edged motifs, a whole body cut out against nothing. There is no background scene to speak of, only colour behind the fur.

The practical difference is where the difficulty sits. On the paisley cat the challenge is telling one small repeated motif from another. Here the fur has no motifs at all, only direction.

What people do with it

Builders find the face immediately and then stall. The closed eyes, the pink nose and the white muzzle come together quickly and cover a tenth of the board; everything after that is fur, and fur pieces cannot be sorted by colour because the same cream-to-amber gradient runs across the whole animal.

What works instead is sorting by the direction of the strokes. Pieces where the strands run vertically belong to the chest, diagonal ones to the shoulder, curled ones to the tail and the cloud. Most people arrive at that sort by accident after failing to sort by colour first.

The cloud is the easy part

The violet cloud along the bottom is the one area with closed shapes and hard outlines, and it also forms the base of the silhouette, so it can be built as a strip and set aside.

Afterwards

The raised chin points the composition upward and out of the frame, so the finished piece reads as looking past you rather than at you. Hung high it points at the ceiling.

The disc is broken along the bottom by the cloud, so the outline is not a clean circle: it stands on a shelf edge better than the fully round designs.

A koala seated inside a mandala

Frontal and symmetrical, sitting with both paws resting on its feet, ears fanned wide. Behind it a mandala fills the disc: concentric rings of geometric ornament in teal, violet and copper, laid over a near-black ground, with a border of stylised eucalyptus leaves breaking past the circle at the edges.

The animal is lit from the front and the background is not, which is the whole visual logic here. The koala's fur catches gold, cream and pale blue; everything behind it stays dark. An ornamental panel runs down the chest and belly, the place where the mandala's vocabulary crosses onto the animal.

The darkest board in the round line

Most designs here are bright end to end. This one keeps roughly half its surface in deep indigo and black, and that changes the assembly: the pieces divide into lit and unlit almost on sight, and the unlit half is where the work is.

What people do with it

The face goes in fast. Two dark eyes, a large black nose and the pale muzzle give the most legible landmark of any board in the round line, and it usually lands within the first few minutes.

Then the sort inverts. Rather than looking for what a piece shows, builders start looking for what it lacks: pieces with no bright content go into a dark pile, and that pile is worked by the faint copper and teal lines running through it, held up to the light to read the pattern. Of all the designs in the range, this is the one most likely to send someone looking for a brighter lamp partway through.

The leaves standing off the rim are handled last, as with the other designs whose edges break the circle, since each attaches along one edge only.

Where the mandala misleads

The rings repeat around the circle. A motif at the four o'clock position has near-twins at other hours, turned to follow the ring, so two pieces can carry the same ornament at different angles and both look correct in either slot. Orientation, not pattern, is what places them.

On the koala's symbolism

Worth being straight about this one. The koala carries no attested traditional symbolism in the way the lion, the wolf or the elephant do. What gets sold as koala symbolism, calm and taking life at your own pace, is a modern reading projected onto the animal's slow metabolism rather than anything documented. The mandala behind it is doing the symbolic work here, and mandalas are Hindu and Buddhist cosmograms, not Australian.

Afterwards

The frontal, symmetrical pose puts this one in the same category as the Forest Deer: it hangs centred rather than off-axis. The dark ground wants a pale wall behind it – on a dark one it disappears, which is the opposite problem from the rest of the round line.
