The wine maps divide the country by wine region, with the vineyards raised on the wood – the France a wine label refers to. The regional maps divide it by région and département, which is the France of postal codes, holidays and where people are from.

Both are cut and engraved the same way. Under them the départements, the towns and the wine villages are engraved: Volnay, Pommard and Meursault, the Médoc, Graves and Entre-Deux-Mers.

Two of them are framed panels that arrive assembled and hang from the fixing built into the back, one on a cool cream ground in dark walnut and one on warm parchment in light oak. The third has no background at all: the country and a separate engraved badge for each wine region, shaped like an ice bucket, a barrel or a corkscrew, mounted straight onto the wall. All three are in our Wine Maps collection with their Italian cousins.

What do the regional maps show?

The thirteen regions, Corsica included, cut as separate pieces, each in its own shade, with the départements engraved inside them – their boundaries drawn as fine lines and their names set within – and the towns named: not only Paris, Lyon and Marseille but Alençon, Cholet and Chartres. The chart is pale cream with a weathered, mottled border, faint vine leaves and grape circles drawn into it, a title cartouche top left and a round wine seal bottom left, so the whole object reads as an old chart rather than a new print. It arrives assembled and hangs from the fixing built into the back.

How the wood and the printing share the work

The wood carries the map: France as a warm brown base with the départements and towns engraved, Paris marked with a star, the region names cut into the wood, and the vineyards raised on top as separate pieces in paler and darker tones, so Bordeaux, the Loire, Burgundy and the Rhône stand off the base and throw a shadow.

The printing carries what wood cannot at this size: around the edge, each region is named again with its grape varieties listed under it, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under Bourgogne, Merlot and Cabernet under Bordeaux, joined to the map by a leader line. It is the difference between a map you look at and one you read.

Where it belongs

Square, which places it comfortably over a sideboard or between cupboards where a landscape format would not sit.
