Around the rose is the journey itself: a small aircraft top left, a mountain range with pines top right, two sailing boats bottom right, and the continents drawn low behind the rose inside a dashed circle. There are no cardinal letters anywhere; the places stand in for them.

Why it suits a journey

A wooden cover survives a rucksack in a way card does not, and that matters more on a trip than anywhere else. The paper is watercolour weight, so a page takes a wash of the view on one side and a ticket or a photograph pasted on the other, and the book comes home as the record of the trip rather than as a pad that fell apart on the way.

The rigid cover is what makes it work en route: on a train seat, a wall or a knee, there is a board behind the paper.

How it is built

One sheet of birch plywood, scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, it reads as a solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism screwed to the cover – the two screw heads show on the back, beside our CREATIF mark – holds the block behind a black card leaf. The rings open: a finished drawing lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full.

Paper and format

50 blank sheets of 200 g/m² watercolour paper. 18.5 × 22 × 4 cm closed, roughly A5, the size that fits a day bag and still gives a usable spread; a little over half a kilo. Every lock is filled with a different ornament – chevrons, scales, dots, spirals – the way a mandala or a zentangle drawing is built, and the eye and the muzzle are drawn the same way. Of all our sketchbooks it is the only one where the wood itself is the whole front.

What you look at instead of a picture is grain: figured birch running the height of the cover, different on every copy, because no two sheets of plywood are alike.

Why plain is a choice

An engraved cover announces what the book is for before it opens – a dragon says one thing, a compass another. This one says nothing, which is what you want when the contents will be varied, or when the book is going to someone whose subject you cannot guess.

It is also the one to buy again.
