Mountain regions stand tallest. On the taped maps there is no backing board and no frame: the wall is the ocean, and the map is only the land.

That is what separates a 3D map from a printed one. The relief changes as the light moves, so the map looks different in the morning than it does under a lamp at night. Two of the maps here come framed on a printed chart-grey ocean instead, and one is a map of France rather than the world – both are covered below.

Why six versions of the same map?

Because the finish changes more than the colour. The engraving, the layer construction and the country outlines are identical across all six; what changes is how the countries separate from each other, and that decides how the map behaves on a wall.

Light is the palest, closest to bare birch, where the shadow between layers does most of the work. Amber lays a honey stain over that same pale ground, so countries separate by tone as well as by depth. Dark runs many warm browns from cream to walnut, which keeps the borders legible from across a room. Chocolate narrows that to two alternating tones and reads as marquetry. Graphite steps furthest from the wood tones, slate and near-black with sand and copper countries scattered through. Multicolor is the only one where countries differ in hue as well as depth, which makes it the easiest to read as a map.

Which finish suits which room?

The pale finishes want light from the side more than they want a dark wall: on white in flat light they read as texture, lit from one side they read as an object. The dark finishes carry a wall on their own and need it plain. Graphite in particular suits rooms that already have wood in them and cannot take more.

Multicolor is the one to choose if the map will be used rather than looked at: pointing at countries, tracing routes, explaining where somewhere is.

What is engraved on the map?

Country names and borders, capitals marked with a star, US states, Canadian provinces and Australian states, cut individually into each piece. On the pale countries the lettering reads from across a room; on the darker ones it is quieter and asks you to come closer.

The six world maps are offered with English or French lettering, chosen on the product page; everything else about the map is identical. The map of France is engraved in French only.

How big is a wooden world map on a real wall?

The world maps run from one metre across to two metres, with an 80 cm size on Multicolor only. A rectangle grows in both directions at once, so the step from M to L is larger than the numbers suggest: the L covers more than twice the wall of the M, and the XL four times.

The two framed panels are 90 and 110 cm wide, and the map of France 50 cm, roughly the size of a large framed photograph. Measure the space before choosing. A map that is too small for its wall looks lost in a way that a map slightly too large never does.

Do you need to drill?

No. The continents go up on double-sided tape, piece by piece, positioned with the paper template in the box, so nothing is drilled and nothing is permanent. Taking a map down again needs a hairdryer to loosen the tape, and fresh tape to put it back up elsewhere.

Allow a few hours. It is closer to hanging wallpaper than to hanging a picture, and a second pair of hands helps. The framed panels skip all of this: they arrive assembled and hang from a single hook.

Is it a decorative object or an accurate map?

A decorative object. Alongside the creams and browns of the other maps there is a warm terracotta, a rust red, a cold slate grey and an olive-tinged brown, distributed so that neighbouring countries almost never share a shade. Mauritania is orange-red beside a pale grey Algeria; Niger sits slate against a walnut Nigeria; Sudan is rust against a cream Egypt.

The map is not painted. Every one of those shades is stained wood, so the grain runs through each country and the surface stays matt and open rather than glossy.

Why it is the most legible map we make

Because neighbouring countries almost never repeat a colour, nearly every border is unambiguous without needing the engraved line or the physical step to explain it. On the single-tone finishes you sometimes have to look twice to see where one country ends. Here you almost never do.

That makes it the finish for anyone who will actually use the map – pointing at countries, tracing routes, explaining where somewhere is. It is also the one children read most easily, which is worth knowing if it is going into a family room rather than an office.

The trade-off, stated plainly

Variety is the whole design, and it makes this the busiest object in the range. In a room that already has pattern – patterned rugs, gallery walls, wallpaper, open shelving full of colour – it adds to the load rather than resolving it.

It works best on a plain wall with a fairly quiet room around it, where it becomes the one complicated thing in the space. That is the opposite of the advice for Light or Amber, which need something else in the room to react against.

Relief that has to compete

Each continent is stacked from several plies and stands off the wall. Under flat overhead light, where a monochrome map goes visually dead, this one still reads because the colours carry it.

Engraving across many grounds

Country names, borders, capitals, US states, Canadian provinces and Australian states are engraved individually. Since the backgrounds vary, the lettering does too: crisp and dark on the cream and sand countries, quieter on the terracotta and the slate.

Because the shades alternate constantly across the map, the clearly readable names are spread throughout rather than clustered in one region.

English or French

The same map is engraved with all its lettering in either language, chosen above: country names, capitals, ocean names, states and provinces. The relationships between countries hold, so it ages as one object.

Direct sunlight remains the risk, and here it is the reds that go first. In a room with a lot of white and natural wood it belongs rather than announces itself.

The reverse is also true and worth knowing before you order. Against a very pale wall the contrast is low, and from across a large room the map reads as texture rather than as a distinct object. If you want something that carries a wall on its own, the darker finishes do that better – or give Amber a genuinely dark wall, where the gold glows, which is exactly how we photograph it.

Shadow does the work here

Because the surface is pale and the tonal contrast between countries is modest, the relief is what defines the map. Rivers are engraved as thin lines running across the regions rather than stopping at boundaries.

The practical effect is that this reads as a real reference map from close up, in a way that a world map at this size cannot. On a world map France is one shape; here it is a hundred named places, and the first thing every French visitor does is lean in and look for theirs.

Who this is for, and it is a narrower group

A world map is bought for what it looks like as often as for where the buyer has been. This one is bought about France specifically: by someone who lives there, comes from there, has moved away from there, or spends their holidays in one particular corner of it.

It also works differently as a gift. With a world map you cannot get it wrong. With this one, the person receiving it either has a relationship with France or does not, and the level of engraved detail matters mainly to the first group.

What the layers do at this size

The regions are cut from stacked plies, so each sits proud of the wall and casts its own shadow, and the boundaries between regions are physical steps rather than printed lines. At 50 × 51 cm the whole map is roughly the size of a large framed photograph, so those shadows are fine rather than dramatic.

It is the smallest of our relief maps. That has a practical consequence: unlike our world maps it does not need to dominate a wall, and it can sit beside other things – in a hallway, between windows, above a desk – without needing clear space around it.

One thing to check before you order

The engraving is in French. Region names, département names and towns all use their French forms, which is correct for the subject but worth knowing if the map is going to somebody who reads no French. Unlike our world maps, this one is not offered in an English version.

Living with it

The same care as the larger maps, with one difference that comes from the scale. The engraved département lines are fine, and dust settles into them more readily than it does on a plain surface. A soft dry brush clears them; a damp cloth will smear rather than lift.

Keep it out of direct sunlight, which lightens the pale regions faster than the dark ones and gradually flattens the distinction between them.

France three ways

We make the country in three forms. This relief map is the wall piece. The 2D version is flatter, lighter and quieter on the wall. And the France Discovery puzzle is the same shape as an evening's work: an illustrated tour you assemble yourself before it becomes decor. The stains here match our Multicolor world map – hung in the same home, they read as a set.

One honest limitation

This is a decorative object rather than a cartographic instrument. The engraving reaches an astonishing number of towns, but not all of them – the smallest communes are left out, and boundaries are simplified at this scale. Behind the map is a printed backing board – a chart-grey ocean crossed by faint meridians, with an old-map wash to it – and the continents are cut from stained wood and mounted on top, standing a few millimetres proud of the surface.

The land runs through the full warm range: pale birch, chestnut, near-black walnut, mid-brown, warm ochre. Neighbouring countries almost never repeat a shade, so nearly every border is legible without needing the engraved line.

The detail you see up close

The ocean names, the compass rose and the small aircraft and ships are not printed on the backing. They are separate wooden pieces mounted on the ocean surface, which is why they carry their own shadows. The lettering on this panel is in English only; unlike the taped maps, it is not offered in French.

That layering is the point of the piece. From a sofa it reads as a framed map; from a metre away it becomes visibly three-dimensional, with the coastlines lifting off the water.

Two sizes, and they are not the same purchase

The small panel is 90 × 60 cm, the medium 110 × 80. The gap between them is larger than the numbers suggest, because a rectangle grows in both directions at once: the medium covers roughly 60 per cent more wall.

The small suits a hallway, a home office, or the space above a desk. The medium wants a sofa, a bed or a wide stretch of clear wall, and at that size the individual countries become readable from across a room rather than only up close.

What the frame changes

Our piece-by-piece maps have no border at all: continents mounted straight onto the wall, with the wall itself as the ocean. This one is a rectangle with a black edge, which puts it in the same category as a framed print.

The practical consequence is where it can hang. A framed rectangle sits comfortably alongside other framed things, in a gallery arrangement or above furniture. A borderless map needs clear wall around it and does not group with anything.

What it asks of the wall

One fixing, rated for a panel this size – a plasterboard anchor rather than a picture pin, and a hook rather than adhesive.

Because the fixing is mechanical, the wall surface stops mattering. Textured plaster, brick, painted panelling and freshly painted walls are all fine, which is not true of our tape-mounted maps.

Living with it

Dust it as you would a framed picture. The raised continents collect a little more than a flat print, so a soft brush works better than a cloth, which can catch on the edges.

Keep it out of direct sunlight. Here the backing fades before the wood does, and as the ocean lightens the contrast that makes the continents stand out begins to go.

Multicolor or Graphite

The two panels share the format and the chart-grey ocean; the difference is the land. The Graphite panel mixes slate and bronze into its continents and reads cooler; this one keeps the land entirely warm. A backing board carries the continents, the whole thing sits inside a slim black frame, and there is nothing to lay out, nothing to tape, no template: it hangs like a picture, from a single fixing. At 110 × 80 cm and five kilos it is the heaviest single piece we ship.

The grey does two jobs

The backing is a mottled concrete grey, printed as an old chart: ruled meridians and parallels with a weathered wash. Everything else on the ocean – the names in wooden lettering, the compass rose, the ship's wheel, the small ships and planes – is separate wooden pieces mounted on the surface, each casting its own shadow.

Against it the continents read as warm. Slate and dark bronze mix with sand, caramel and terracotta, each country its own shade, and the cold ground pushes the land forward far more than a wooden ocean would.

Still fully three-dimensional

The frame does not flatten anything. The continents are stacked from plies between 4 and 9 mm, mountain regions standing tallest, and the layers cast their own shadows on the printed ground. Country names, borders, US states, Canadian provinces and Australian states are engraved individually, exactly as on the taped maps. The lettering on this panel is in French only; unlike the taped maps, it is not offered in English.

Where it fits that a piece-by-piece map does not

Two situations. The first is a rented flat, or any wall where you would rather not use adhesive tape: this needs one hook. The second is the person who wants a world map on the wall this evening rather than after an afternoon of assembly.

It also suits the walls our tape struggles with – heavily textured plaster, brick, painted panelling – since none of that matters when the fixing is a nail.

Framed, and what the frame changes

Our assembled maps have an irregular outline: continents against bare wall, no border anywhere. This one is a rectangle with a defined black edge, which puts it in the same visual category as a print or a photograph rather than as an object mounted directly on the wall.

That is a real difference in how a room reads. A framed rectangle above a sofa sits comfortably in a room of other framed things. A borderless map of separate continents does not – it wants clear wall around it, and it does not hang in a gallery arrangement.

What it does not do

You cannot rearrange it. On the piece-by-piece maps the continents can be spaced differently, the ocean lettering placed where you like, and the accessories moved around. Here the composition is fixed at the workshop.

It also cannot be resized to your wall. The 110 × 80 cm format is the only one this panel comes in, whereas the assembled maps run from 80 cm to two metres.

Living with it

Being a single sealed panel it is easier to look after than the assembled maps: dust it as you would a framed picture, without working around raised edges. Keep it out of direct sun, which will fade the grey ground before it touches the wood.

The weight is worth planning for. Five kilos needs a fixing rated for it – a plasterboard anchor rather than a picture pin.

Panel or pieces

Choose the taped map if you want scale and the ritual of building your wall yourself.
