carte-du-monde-en-bois-2d-foncee
2D Wooden World Map Dark

One warm brown, and a white wall

Dark is a single tone throughout: the colour of oak, warm rather than black, the same on every piece from Greenland to Antarctica. Cut from one 4 mm sheet, it lies flat against the wall, and against white, cream or pale grey it gives the strongest contrast of our flat maps, reading from the far side of a room without needing light on it.

On a dark wall it does the opposite and disappears. Of the three flat finishes this is the one that most depends on where it goes.

The only world map that starts at XS

60 × 40 cm, and no other finish or format offers it. That size fits a hallway, a stairwell, the wall beside a door or the space above a desk, places where a metre of map would take over. From there it runs through S and M to L at 150 × 100 cm.

Flat, and what that means for the room

At 4 mm the map projects almost nothing. In a corridor or beside a doorway, where people pass close and a raised map would eventually be caught by a shoulder or a coat, that matters more than relief would. It is also lighter to handle on the day it goes up than the relief version.

The figures

The map comes with a set of small wooden figures to place where you like: the Statue of Liberty on the American coast and Christ the Redeemer on Brazil, the Eiffel Tower on Paris, the pyramids on Egypt, the Taj Mahal on India, a pagoda on China, the Sydney Opera House on Australia, an elephant on Africa, a penguin on Antarctica, and for the oceans a ship, a plane, a whale, an anchor and a compass. On a single-tone map they are what gives the eye somewhere to land, and children find them before they find the countries.

Engraving on a brown ground

Country names, borders, capitals and major cities, US states, Canadian provinces and Australian states are engraved individually. On this finish the lettering is a shade darker than the wood around it: clear when you stand in front of the map, quiet from across the room, which is the trade of a single-tone finish. Add push pins and it becomes a record of where you have been.

English or French

The same map is engraved with all its lettering in either language, chosen above: country names, capitals, ocean names, states and provinces. Everything else is identical.

How it ages

A uniform stain hides gradual change well, so the map looks the same age throughout as the wood warms over years. Direct sun is the exception: it changes the exposed side and not the shaded one, and on a single tone the line between them shows. Keep it off a wall that takes afternoon sun.

Dark or Multicolor

Dark is one tone and asks for a pale wall. Multicolor runs four tones from cream to walnut and holds on almost any wall, at the cost of being the busier object. If the wall is white and you want the map to read as one calm shape, this one.

One honest limitation

A decorative object rather than a cartographic instrument. Small countries and island groups are simplified or omitted at this scale, and coastlines are smoothed.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0732/8818/8035/files/L-6_f235d92a-7b0e-4de7-a15e-414289007e55.jpg?v=1780866702
