There is no shadow on a flat map to separate pale wood from a pale surface, and this is the finish where that matters most. What varies instead is the birch itself: the grain runs differently through each piece, and on a dark wall that reads as texture across the whole map. It is the most material of our finishes; the map announces what it is made of before what it depicts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eFlat, and light\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e4 mm and a single layer, so it barely projects from the wall and is the lightest world map in the range to handle. Beside a door or along a corridor it is out of the way of shoulders and coats, which the \u003ca href=\"\/en\/products\/3d-wooden-world-map-light\"\u003erelief version\u003c\/a\u003e is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eThe figures\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA set of small wooden figures comes with the map, to place where you like: the Statue of Liberty on the American coast and Christ the Redeemer on Brazil, the Eiffel Tower on Paris, the pyramids on Egypt, the Taj Mahal on India, a pagoda on China, the Sydney Opera House on Australia, an elephant on Africa, a penguin on Antarctica, and a ship, a plane, a whale, an anchor and a compass for the oceans. On the pale wood they read as small dark silhouettes, and they are usually the first thing a visitor touches.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eEngraving on bare wood\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCountry names, borders, capitals and major cities, US states, Canadian provinces and Australian states, engraved individually. The laser burns darker than the surface, so the lettering is brown on cream and as crisp as any map we cut; this is the flat map to choose if someone will stand and read it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eEnglish or French\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe same map is engraved with all its lettering in either language, chosen above: country names, capitals, ocean names, states and provinces. Everything else is identical.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eHow it ages, and the one thing to avoid\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBare birch warms over years, drifting from cream toward straw. That happens evenly across the map and reads as age rather than damage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDirect sunlight is different. It changes the wood where the light falls and not where it does not, and on a map that shows as a visible line across the continents. Keep it off a sunlit wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eOne honest limitation\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA decorative object rather than a cartographic instrument.
