It is the only board in our ornamental range with no creature in it at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe outline follows the flower rather than a circle: petal tips project all the way round, so the finished shape has a scalloped edge rather than a smooth one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eMirrored, and repeating\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe board mirrors down its vertical axis, like our animal portraits – every petal on the left has a reversed twin on the right. On top of that, the petals repeat along their bands: two pieces from the same arc carry near-identical ornament and both look correct in either slot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe centre line and the position along the arc are what place a piece; the pattern alone will not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eHow it gets built\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe axis first. The crown, the heart and the pendant drop all sit on the centre line and have no mirror twin anywhere, so they can be placed with certainty. Then band by band outward, each arc closing before the next begins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eButterflies and leaves are cut into the petals as figure pieces – the garden the lotus grows in, hidden inside the flower.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat a mandala actually is\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA cosmogram from Hindu and Buddhist practice: a diagram of the universe organised around a centre, used as an aid to concentration. The adult colouring boom of the 2010s pulled the form into secular use as a relaxation exercise, which is where most people now meet it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis design belongs to that secular reading – it is ornamental rather than devotional, and we would not claim otherwise.
