Because the bands run parallel down the whole length of the animal and repeat their sequence, a piece from behind the head and a piece from the mid-body can carry the same three stripes in the same order. There is no landmark along it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tail flukes and the mouth line are different: both have hard edges and a distinctive shape, and both anchor an end of the board. Build inward from those two and let the flank close in the middle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the same reason, this is the best design in the range to build in company. The flank is a stretch you hand across the table – and the moment someone finds the anchor is the moment everyone else stops pretending not to compete for the whimsy pieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat the whale carries\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe whale's oldest documented symbolism is not gentleness but transformation. In the Jonah narrative it is the agent of trial and return, the thing that swallows and gives back. Maritime cultures added majesty and scale. The modern reading, whale as emblem of conservation, is recent and belongs to the last fifty years rather than to any older tradition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eAfterwards\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe width is the point. This one goes above a sofa, a bed or a doorway, where a tall design would sit awkwardly, and it needs a run of clear wall rather than a corner.
