licorne-feerique-puzzle-en-bois
Fabulous Unicorn Wooden Puzzle

A mane that runs the length of the board

The unicorn's head is in profile at the left, and everything to the right of it is mane: long flowing strands in blue, violet, rose and gold that sweep back and fill two thirds of the surface. The horn spirals up from the brow; the muzzle below is left pale grey.

The head itself is the smallest part of the composition, which is unusual. In most of our animal designs the face dominates.

Not the pink version

Unicorn products at this scale are usually pastel and glittery. This one is worked in the same ornamental vocabulary as our tigers and foxes: dense zentangle, saturated colour, hard boundaries.

That makes it the version for someone who wants a unicorn and not a child's unicorn. (For young hands we cut the watercolour Little Unicorn at twenty pieces.)

The mane is where the time goes

The strands run roughly parallel across the whole board and the colour sequence repeats along them. A piece from the upper mane and one from the lower can carry the same three hues in the same order, and position along the strand is what places them rather than colour.

The horn and the eye are the two hard-edged features and the only asymmetric details. Build from there and work backward into the mane.

A fairy tale in the mane

The figural pieces are a complete storybook: smaller unicorns and horses, a dragon, a wizard, a castle, a crown, a rainbow, a star, a gem, butterflies. No other design of ours hides a world this far from a real habitat – the unicorn keeps the company it was invented in.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0732/8818/8035/files/La-Licorne-Feerique-Puzzle-en-bois-2.jpg?v=1780866596
