biche-fretillante-puzzle-en-bois
Frisky Doe Wooden Puzzle

Ears that reach past the frame

A doe head-on, and the ears are the composition: they rise higher than the head itself and lean outward, worked in cobalt and gold feathered scrollwork that is looser and simpler than anything on the face below.

The face is the opposite – dense paisley in yellow, magenta and red, packed so tightly that no two square centimetres repeat. The two treatments meet at the brow, and that boundary is the most useful line on the board.

The eyes are the giveaway

Long black lashes, a dark rim, a white catchlight. They are the only realistically drawn feature on a board that is otherwise pure ornament, and they are what makes the animal read as a doe rather than as a pattern in the shape of one.

Everything else can be placed relative to them.

A forest hidden in the head

Figural pieces are cut through the face and ears: a hare, a fawn, a boar, a hedgehog, birds, fish, leaves. Lift them out and they leave clean silhouettes across the board, so the half-built puzzle reads as a doe full of holes shaped like other animals.

They sit inside the outline rather than around it, which means you meet them mid-assembly rather than at the start.

Why the ears are harder than they look

They mirror each other almost exactly. The scrollwork on the left ear has a twin on the right, same blue, same gold, differing only in direction – and because the ears are the largest continuous area on the board, that is where most of the difficulty sits.

The face does not have this problem. It is symmetrical in layout but the paisley motifs differ from side to side, so pieces there can be placed on their pattern.

Where to start

The eyes and the nose, then outward through the muzzle, and leave the ears until the head is closed. The ears are also what push the board to 30 × 24 cm – among the widest in this series.
