The face is drawn in fine parallel lines that follow the muscles, with the gold concentrated around the eyes and muzzle like a mask; the surrounding fur is cut as long radiating strands, so the head sits inside a halo of its own hair.

The eyes are the point. Nearly everything else in this range is drawn in profile; the gorilla holds your gaze, and at 42 × 39 cm it is large enough that the effect carries across a room.

Where the colour stops helping

The face sorts itself: any piece with gold on it belongs there. The fur halo is where the work is – every piece some mix of green and blue, and the only variable is the line work running through it.

What separates those pieces is direction. The face lines curve, the shoulder lines run diagonally, the outer fur radiates. Sorting by the angle of the lines rather than by colour is what makes this one solvable.

The largest silhouette in the range

215 pieces – more than any other silhouette we cut; only the round mandala boards go higher, at 250. It comes in a pale wooden gift box with a sliding lid and a cord tie, printed with the image, with a printed cardboard box as the lower-priced option.

Afterwards

Frontal and symmetrical, so it hangs centred rather than off-axis. The dark outline of the head against a pale wall is what makes it read from a distance, and it needs clear space around it – the radiating fur is the widest part of the composition and gets lost against a busy background.
