The whole head is broken into flat triangular planes, low-poly rather than patterned, and each plane carries a single unmixed colour: cerise, cobalt, lime, tangerine, violet. The mane radiates outward in long pointed shards that grow sharper towards the edge, so the outline reads as a burst rather than as fur.

The face keeps the warm end of the palette. Amber and orange across the muzzle and brow, a dark eye set deep under the brow, a black nose. Everything cool sits behind it in the mane, which pushes the head forward.

A whole savannah in white

Lift the figural pieces out and their silhouettes stay behind as white gaps across the face and mane. There are more of them here than in most designs: an elephant, a giraffe, a camel, a rhino, a hippo, a leopard, a gazelle, an ostrich, a flamingo, a monkey, a gorilla, a hyena, and smaller lions.

Because the board is a mosaic of flat colour, each removed animal leaves a clean shape rather than a torn pattern, and the empty silhouettes read almost as a second picture.

As the animals come out, the board turns into its own second act – a lion increasingly made of absences. The removed herd ends up arranged along the table edge as you go; it is hard not to.

Why the mane is slow

Each shard is a single flat colour with no internal detail, so a piece tells you almost nothing on its own. What identifies it is the angle of its edges and which two colours meet along them. Two magenta triangles from opposite sides of the mane are indistinguishable until you look at the geometry.

The face is where to begin. It is the only area with recognisable features and gradual colour, and it fixes the centre before the mane spreads outward.

Two lions, two temperaments

The symbolism is the same as its ornamental sibling – solar power, courage, rule, one of the few animal meanings that holds steady across cultures. The treatment is not. This one is graphic and modern where the other is folkloric, and it suits a room with clean lines rather than one with texture and pattern already in it.

Afterwards

The spiked outline is the most irregular in the collection and casts a strong shadow when lit from one side. It needs clear wall around it: hung close to a shelf or a frame, the points get lost.
