Size guide

Choosing your map size

Every map is supplied as separate wooden pieces that you arrange on the wall yourself, so the size below is the space the finished map will occupy – not a box or a frame. Measure your wall first, then leave around 20 cm of clear space on each side so the map has room to breathe.

3D wooden world maps

Framed panels

Mounted on a solid backing panel, ready to hang. No assembly, single piece.

Model Size Dimensions Weight
World map, Multicolor S 90 × 60 cm 4.0 kg
World map, Multicolor M 110 × 80 cm 5.0 kg
World map, Graphite M 110 × 80 cm 5.0 kg
France wine map 65 × 65 cm 3.5 kg
Italy wine map 58 × 65 cm 3.0 kg

Framed panels arrive assembled and are noticeably heavier than the piece-by-piece maps, since they include the backing panel.

Three steps before you order

  1. Measure the free wall. Width and height of the clear area, ignoring furniture that reaches less than 20 cm up the wall.
  2. Subtract the breathing room. Take off roughly 20 cm from each side. What remains is the largest map that will look comfortable there.
  3. Check the shape. All our world maps are wider than they are tall, roughly 3:2. A tall narrow wall will suit a smaller size than its height suggests.

Still unsure? Mark the outline on your wall with masking tape before ordering – it takes two minutes and settles the question.

Frequently asked

Is the size the map itself or the packaging?
The map. Boxes are much smaller, since the map ships as separate pieces.

Between two sizes – which should I take?
The larger one. The most common regret we hear is a map that looks smaller on the wall than it did in the box.

What if my wall is textured or painted?
The supplied tape holds on most smooth and lightly textured surfaces. On heavily textured walls, rough plaster or fresh paint (under three weeks old), the bond is weaker – write to us before ordering and we'll advise.

How much does it weigh on the wall?
Between 0.36 kg and 4.5 kg depending on size, spread across many separate pieces, so no single point carries much load. Framed panels are heavier and hang as one piece.

About this product

The Light finish is the palest map we make. The plywood keeps its natural tone with only a clear protective coat, so the wood grain stays visible across every continent – the map reads as raw material rather than as a painted object.

It works where a darker map would sit too heavily: white and off-white walls, pale oak floors, Scandinavian and Japandi interiors, small rooms where a dark mass would close the space in. Against a dark wall it flips the effect entirely and behaves like a light drawing.

How the layers work

Each continent is cut and assembled from several plies rather than one flat sheet. The land sits proud of the wall, so the map casts its own shadow – sharp in the morning, soft and wide by evening. On a wall lit from one side the relief is visible from across the room.

Because the layers vary in height, the total depth changes between areas of the map. Mountain regions stand furthest from the wall.

What is actually engraved

Country names and borders are engraved individually, including internal divisions like US states and Canadian provinces. Antarctica is included. A set of wooden accessories comes with the map – a compass, two planes, a boat, an anchor and a whale – to place across the oceans wherever you like. The ocean names come as separate wooden lettering, so you decide where they sit.

Add push pins and the map turns into a record of where you have been – the reason many customers come back later for a second set of pins.

One honest limitation

This is a decorative object, not a cartographic instrument. At this scale some small countries and island groups are simplified or left out, and coastlines are smoothed. If you need geographic precision, a printed map will serve you better.

Living with it

Wood responds to its surroundings. Keep the map away from bathrooms, unventilated kitchens and radiators, and out of direct sunlight, which will lighten the surface unevenly over a few years. Dust it dry – no abrasives, no wet cloths.
