About this product

Two blocks, one bear

A standing bear figure carved from basswood, with two blanks in the box rather than one. The second block is the point of this kit: a first bear teaches you where the wood is, and a second one comes out considerably better.

The C17P knife handles both the rough shaping and the detail, which keeps the process simple. Nothing to swap, nothing to decide.

What is in the box

A C17P carving knife, two basswood blanks, a carving pattern and a pencil to mark it, a leather strop with polishing compound, three sheets of sandpaper, cut-resistant tape, a printed booklet and a video tutorial.

Where the shape is found

The bear is worked as a silhouette first, then rounded. The muzzle and the ears are the two features that make it read as a bear rather than as a generic animal, and both are cut late, once the mass of the body is right.

Errors at that stage are why the second block exists. Nobody gets the muzzle right the first time.

If you would rather begin with the outline already cut for you, the Comfort Bird kit does exactly that.

Safety

This set contains tools with sharp edges. Handle them carefully, and use each tool only for the purpose it was designed for. Recommended from 14, with adult supervision for younger carvers. In carving the blunt knife is the dangerous one, since it has to be forced.
