About this product
A Swedish good-luck horse, carved and painted
The Dala horse comes from Dalarna in central Sweden, where woodcutters carved them for their children through the winter and painted them in the kurbits style. It became the country's unofficial emblem. This kit carves one from a pre-shaped basswood blank.
The blank arrives already cut to the horse's outline, so the work is shaping and detail rather than reducing a block. The paints are included, because a Dala horse is not finished until it is painted.
What is in the box
A C14 carving knife with a wooden handle, a basswood horse blank, pencil, brush and paints, two sheets of P150 sandpaper, a leather strop with polishing compound, cut-resistant tape, a printed booklet and a video tutorial.
The painting is half the project
Carving takes an evening; painting takes another. The traditional finish is a solid red body with white and yellow kurbits patterning over it, but the paints supplied allow any scheme. Children who lose interest during carving usually reappear for this part.
Safety
This set contains tools with sharp edges. Handle them carefully, and use each tool only for the purpose it was designed for. Recommended from 14, with adult supervision for younger carvers. In carving the blunt knife is the dangerous one, since it has to be forced.
