About this product

A cup you can actually drink from

The kuksa is a Nordic drinking cup, carved from a single piece of wood and carried on a belt loop. Sámi herders used them, and they have been in continuous use for centuries because wood barely conducts heat: the cup stays comfortable in the hand with boiling coffee inside.

Every other kit here makes something to look at. This one makes something to use.

Walnut, not basswood

The blank arrives pre-cut to the cup's rough shape, and it is walnut – a deliberate departure from the rest of the range. Walnut is harder to cut than basswood and takes more effort, but it resists water, holds a fine surface and darkens with use rather than wearing out.

A basswood cup would not last. This one will.

What is in the box

A C4 carving knife for the outside, a K8a/14 gouge for hollowing the bowl, a pre-cut walnut kuksa blank, a leather strop with polishing compound, five sheets of sandpaper in assorted grits, cut-resistant tape, beeswax and mineral oil for finishing, a leather cord for the handle loop, a printed booklet and a video tutorial.

Hollowing hardwood takes patience

The gouge removes far less per cut in walnut than it would in soft wood, and the bowl is the majority of the work. Cut across the grain rather than along it, in short arcs, and expect several sittings rather than one. Five sheets of sandpaper in graded grits take the surface the rest of the way.

If you would rather learn the hollowing motion on a softer wood first, the Love Spoon kit uses the same idea in basswood.

Finishing matters here

Beeswax and mineral oil are included because the cup will hold liquid. Both are food-safe, and the wax needs renewing once or twice a year depending on use. Do not put a kuksa in a dishwasher.

Safety

This set contains tools with sharp edges. Handle them carefully, and use each tool only for the purpose it was designed for. Recommended from 14, with adult supervision for younger carvers. In carving the blunt knife is the dangerous one, since it has to be forced.
