About this product
Two blocks, one matching pair
A pair of Dutch clogs, carved from two basswood blocks. The clog is one of the oldest wooden objects still made, and it is here for people who have carved a figure already and want something that will actually resist them.
Two blocks, two shoes. They have to match, which is a demand nothing else in this range makes of you.
What is in the box
A C4M carving knife for the outside shape, a K8a/14 gouge for hollowing the foot cavity, two basswood blanks, a carving pattern, a leather strop with polishing compound, six sheets of sandpaper, cut-resistant tape, beeswax, a printed booklet and a video tutorial.
Hollowing without seeing what you are doing
The outside of a clog is straightforward: a wedge with a curved toe. The inside is not. The cavity narrows as it deepens, so most of the gouge work happens where you cannot see the surface being cut, and depth has to be judged by feel and by checking the wall thickness from outside.
Go slower than feels necessary. A wall cut too thin cannot be repaired.
Making a pair, not two shoes
The second clog is the real test. It has to mirror the first rather than merely resemble it, which means measuring rather than eyeing, and carving the two alternately rather than finishing one and starting the other.
Carvers who work them in parallel end up with a pair. Carvers who finish one first usually end up with two singles.
The other gouge kit in this range is the Kuksa – one object instead of two, hollowed deeper, in walnut.
Safety
This set contains tools with sharp edges. Handle them carefully, and use each tool only for the purpose it was designed for. Recommended from 14, with adult supervision for younger carvers. In carving the blunt knife is the dangerous one, since it has to be forced.
