About this product
Two rabbits, two designs
A spring kit that carves a pair of rabbits from basswood, with two different templates rather than the same shape twice. Carbon paper is included for transferring the outlines onto the blanks, which is a step most kits leave you to improvise.
The paints are in the box, so the rabbits can be finished bright or left as bare wood.
What is in the box
A C16 carving knife, two basswood blanks, two carving templates, carbon paper, a leather strop with polishing compound, sandpaper, cut-resistant tape, pencil, brush and paints, a printed booklet and a video tutorial.
The carbon paper is the useful part
Transferring a template onto a curved block is where beginners lose the shape before they have cut anything. Freehand copying drifts; carbon paper does not. Trace the outline on both faces of the block and the two sides stay aligned as you cut down to the line.
Two designs, one pair
Because the templates differ, the finished rabbits are a pair rather than duplicates. That makes the kit work as a shared project, with one person on each design – though there is one knife between you, so it is a taking-turns arrangement. If you want a blade each, that is the Mushrooms kit.
Safety
This set contains tools with sharp edges. Handle them carefully, and use each tool only for the purpose it was designed for. Recommended from 14, with adult supervision for younger carvers. In carving the blunt knife is the dangerous one, since it has to be forced.
