Two knives, so two people carve at once

Every other kit in this range comes with one knife and assumes one carver. This one has two: a C1 with a sheath sized for a child, and a C4 for an adult. Both have oak handles, both are sharp on arrival.

There are two blanks as well, so nobody is waiting for a turn.

What is in the box

A C1 carving knife with sheath, a C4 carving knife with sheath, two basswood blanks, twelve sheets of sandpaper in mixed grits, cut-resistant tape, paints, two brushes, two pencils, a printed booklet and a video tutorial.

Why mushrooms

A mushroom is a stem and a dome, which means the whole figure is two curved surfaces meeting. There is no face to get wrong and no proportion to judge, so a child's mushroom and an adult's mushroom both come out looking like mushrooms.

That is the difference between this and a figure kit. Carving side by side only works if both results are satisfying.

What people do with it

The two carvers usually work at different speeds and finish at different times, and the sandpaper is where they converge: twelve sheets across mixed grits is enough for both to sand thoroughly, and sanding is the part a younger carver can do without supervision.

The paints come last, and by then the two mushrooms will not match. That is generally considered the good outcome.

If the younger carver is the nervous one, the Christmas Tree kit is built around a rounded-tip knife instead.

Safety

This set contains tools with sharp edges. Handle them carefully, and use each tool only for the purpose it was designed for. Recommended from 14, with adult supervision for younger carvers. In carving the blunt knife is the dangerous one, since it has to be forced.
