The kit built around a safer knife

This is the one designed for a first knife rather than a first project. The C1 Kid has a rounded blade tip instead of a point and comes with a leather sheath, which changes what a slip does: a rounded tip pushes the skin aside where a pointed one enters it.

The subject is a Christmas tree, which is simple on purpose. Straight cuts, repeated, at a consistent angle.

What is in the box

A C1 Kid carving knife with rounded tip and leather sheath, two basswood blanks, three sheets of P1500 sandpaper, cut-resistant tape, pencil, brush and paints, a printed booklet and a video tutorial.

Why a tree is the right first shape

The branches are notches cut into a tapering block, all at roughly the same angle, all the same motion. A beginner repeats one cut thirty times instead of learning thirty cuts, and by the end of the first tree the hand has learned the movement.

Two blanks are supplied. The second tree looks noticeably better than the first, which is the point of the exercise.

Working together

This is the kit most often bought for a parent and a teenager to use side by side. The rounded tip and the sheath make it the one we would suggest if the carver is younger, and the paints at the end give a natural stopping point.

If two of you want to carve at the same time, the Mushrooms kit comes with two knives. For an older carver, the Santa kit covers the same season with a pointed blade.

Safety

This set contains tools with sharp edges. Handle them carefully, and use each tool only for the purpose it was designed for. Recommended from 14, with adult supervision for younger carvers. In carving the blunt knife is the dangerous one, since it has to be forced.
