About this product
A Christmas figure that comes back every year
Carved decorations are different from bought ones: they go on the tree, come off in January, and reappear the next December with the year attached to them. This kit carves a Santa figure from basswood and paints it.
Two blanks are supplied rather than one: the first Santa is the rehearsal, and the second one goes on the tree.
What is in the box
A C16 carving knife, two basswood blanks, a carving pattern, a leather strop with polishing compound, cut-resistant tape, pencil, brush and paints, a printed booklet and a video tutorial.
The beard does most of the work
Santa reads as Santa through three things: the hat, the beard and the belt. Everything else can be approximate. The beard is a series of parallel grooves cut into a curved surface, and it is the part worth slowing down for, because it is also the part that cannot be undone.
Paint after carving, not before. The paint fills the grooves if applied early and the beard loses its depth.
Timing
Allow two evenings, and start in the first half of December rather than the week before Christmas. Paint needs to dry between coats.
For a younger carver, the Christmas Tree kit covers the same season with a rounded-tip knife.
Safety
This set contains tools with sharp edges. Handle them carefully, and use each tool only for the purpose it was designed for. Recommended from 14, with adult supervision for younger carvers. In carving the blunt knife is the dangerous one, since it has to be forced.
