About this product
The only object, and the only one built lengthwise
A steam locomotive with a cowcatcher, chimney stack, cab and driving wheels. Every other model here is an animal built as a stack of profile slices; this one runs horizontally, thirty centimetres end to end.
That changes what the layers do. On a head they describe a curved surface; here they describe mechanical parts – the boiler is a cylinder of stacked discs, the wheels are concentric rings, the cab is a box with windows cut through it.
Windows and openings
The cab has windows cut right through the stack, which means the layers behind are visible through the layers in front. It is the only model here with any transparency, and it is what makes the locomotive read as a machine with an inside rather than as a solid shape.
The build
Seventy-six pieces, an hour to an hour and a half. It is assembled as several sub-stacks – boiler, cab, wheels – brought together at the end rather than as one continuous run, which makes it more varied than the heads.
Finished
30 × 9 × 14 cm, and the proportion is the point. It is a long, low object and it belongs on a windowsill, a mantelpiece or the front edge of a bookshelf rather than among books.
