About this product
A moon over red mountains
The horse is shown trotting, head bowed, and the window inside it rises from a green valley floor through layered red ridges – cut like canyon rock – to a moon in the sky at the top of the neck. The mane and tail are cut as long flowing strands around the frame.
The landscape runs higher into the animal than in any other kit here: the scene climbs the neck almost to the ears, so the frame around it narrows to a ribbon.
Where the difficulty sits
The mane. It is made of long curved sections that meet at shallow angles, and a brush loaded too heavily will bridge the gaps between them and lose the separation the layers were cut to create.
Use less paint than feels right, and work along the curves rather than across them.
Assembly
Six layers, glued in sequence – painted flat first, as with the whole range, since the moon and the far ridges sit at the back of the stack. At 16 × 13 cm the piece stands well without leaning, since the four legs give it a wide base.
