Dienes blocks, the full set
Forty-eight wooden shapes varying in four properties: form, colour, size and thickness. It is a standard teaching material devised by the Hungarian mathematician Zoltán Dienes, used to teach classification and set logic before either is named.
The point is that no two pieces are identical and every piece differs from every other in a countable number of ways.
What you do with them
Sort by one property, then by two. Find the piece that differs from another in exactly one respect. Build a sequence where each item changes one thing from the last. Ten cards and twenty graded tasks cover this progression.
The exercises look trivial and are the foundation of set theory.
