About this product
A mane made of edges
A lion's head facing forward, mane sweeping back and out around it. This is the design the layered technique suits best: a mane is hundreds of strands radiating from a centre, and stepped cardboard edges do exactly that without anyone drawing them.
The face is the opposite – smooth and rounded – so the two halves of the sculpture use the same layers to entirely different effect.
Where the light does the work
Because the mane layers step outward at every angle, the sculpture catches light differently from every direction. A lamp to one side turns the mane into a fan of shadow lines; flat lighting flattens it to a mass.
It is the model in this range that changes most depending on where you put it.
The build
A hundred and eighteen pieces, around two hours including sorting. The mane sections are the widest pieces in the box and sit at the back of the stack, so the sculpture looks wrong until roughly halfway through and then resolves quickly.
Finished
15.5 × 14 × 14 cm, nearly cubic, which makes it the most compact of the animal heads. It works on a bookshelf where the wider models overhang.
