About this product

A wine box that becomes a bird house

The front panel carries a round hole cut clean through the wood, framed by an engraved wreath of vine leaves and grapes, with a small wooden perch fitted just below it. At the foot of the panel three birds sit on an engraved branch. None of it is decoration for its own sake: once the bottle is gone, the box goes outside and spends the rest of its life as a nesting box.

Most wine boxes are handsome and then empty. This one has somewhere to go.

Warm honey brown, with a rope to carry it

The plywood is stained a warm honey brown, lighter than our dark boxes and warmer than the bare birch of the light ones, and the engraving burns darker into it. A jute rope handle is threaded through the top panel, so the box is carried by the rope now and hung by it later.

How it opens and what comes with it

Hook a finger in the hole at the top of the front panel and lift: the panel slides up out of grooves in the two side panels and the bottle lifts out. Slide it back down and the box is closed again. A flat oval glass holder comes with it: set the hole over the neck of the bottle and it carries two glasses by their stems.

Larger than the rest

At 12.5 × 12.5 × 34.5 cm it is wider and taller than our other boxes, which is what makes the second life work: a nest box needs room inside that a snug bottle sleeve does not have. It still takes a standard 75 cl bottle, with a little more air around it.

Who to give it to

Someone with a garden, a balcony with a tree in view, or children who would climb the ladder to put it up. The wine is the first gift; the box is the second, and it arrives the day somebody notices a bird going in and out of it.

Hanging it afterwards

Two to four metres up, with the hole facing away from the prevailing wind and out of the strong afternoon sun, and a clear flight path in front rather than dense foliage. Hang it by the rope or, better in wind, screw it to the trunk through the back panel, and give it a spot sheltered from the worst of the rain: it is plywood, not marine timber. Clean it out each autumn once the brood has flown.
