Thirteen signs, two cars and three roads
Wooden road signs on stands – no entry, give way, pedestrian crossing, roadworks, and a fuel station promising petrol in 800 metres – with two small wooden cars and three printed card roads that lay out to a playing area of 180 × 42 cm.
The signs are the real ones rather than invented shapes, which is the point: a child learns the actual symbols they will see from a car window.
How the roads change it
Without them the signs are objects. With them there is a junction, a crossing and somewhere to drive to, so the signs acquire a reason to be in particular places, and a child starts placing them deliberately rather than at random.
The roads fold away; the signs and cars do not need them for free play.
