About this product

Counting rods, the Cuisenaire way

Fifty-six rods in graded lengths from one to ten centimetres, each length its own colour – twenty single-centimetre cubes at one end, a pair of ten-centimetre rods at the other. The set follows the method of the Belgian teacher Georges Cuisenaire, used in primary classrooms since the 1950s; the colours are Igroteco's own rather than the classic scheme.

The principle is that a child handles number relationships before naming them. Two pink two-rods laid end to end are the same length as one red four-rod, and that is what four equals two plus two looks like when you can hold it.

What comes with them

Ten double-sided cards and twenty logic tasks, which take the set from free play into structured work: matching lengths, building equivalences, finding all the ways to make a given number.

The tasks cover addition, subtraction, fractions, multiplication and division depending on how far the child has got.

Why wood rather than plastic

Weight. A plastic rod slides when a child lays another beside it; a wooden one stays put, and lining rods up accurately is the whole exercise.

What it is

Fifty-six rods, ten cards, twenty tasks, 300 g in a 23 × 17 × 4 cm box.
