About this product
A compass with the journey drawn into it
A compass rose engraved on warm brown birch with an arrow running through it from top to bottom – head above, fletching below – and the journey drawn around it: a small aircraft top left, mountains with pines top right, two sailing boats bottom right, and the continents low behind the rose inside a dashed circle. There are no cardinal letters; the places stand in for them.
Land, sea and air in one drawing, which is what makes it the travel cover rather than a mountain cover or a sailing one.
Built for a rucksack
A wooden cover does not bend, does not crease at the corner and does not soften when the bag gets damp, and the pages inside stay flat because the cover will not let them do otherwise. It is heavier than a paper journal. That is the trade, and it is the reason the notebook comes home intact.
A page a day
Every page is headed with a date line and the days of the week, so the travel diary dates itself: one page an evening, the day ticked, the ruled lines below for what happened. Tickets and pressed things still get pasted in; ruled lines have never stopped anyone.
Afterwards it goes on a shelf and stays recognisable across the room, which is the argument for a permanent cover over a disposable one. The same compass with blank watercolour paper is the Travel sketchbook, for the trip that gets drawn rather than written.
How it is built
The cover is a single sheet of birch plywood, scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, the notebook reads as one solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism is screwed to the cover – the two screw heads show on the back, beside our CREATIF mark – and holds the block between black card leaves. The rings open: a page lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full.
Paper and format
100 lined sheets of 90 g/m² paper, each page headed with a date line and the days of the week. It takes pencil, ballpoint and fineliner. 18.5 × 22 × 4 cm closed, a little over half a kilo.
