A savannah at dusk, with a sun you can't miss
The elephant stands with its trunk raised, and behind the trunk hangs the scene's centerpiece: a huge low sun with birds crossing it. Under the dark evening sky, acacia trees line the horizon – a giraffe stands among them, and an elephant family shelters in the shade.
It is the range's richest game of find-the-animal: a giraffe, elephants inside the elephant, and the birds against the sun.
The dark sky changes the approach
Most kits in this range have a light sky. This one is dark, and that reverses the usual order on the sky layer: lay the deep blue ground first and put everything lighter over it, rather than the other way round.
Blue and black are the two colours this design will use most. Mix them rather than using black neat, which flattens the sky.
Assembly
Six layers, glued in order – paint them flat first, since the sun and the horizon animals sit at the back of the stack where no brush reaches after gluing. The raised trunk arrives at the front and is the piece most likely to be knocked while the rest dries, so give it space.
The other safari kit is the lion – the same country by daylight, at full stride.
