About this product

A volcano inside the dinosaur

The T-rex is shown mid-stride with the jaws open, and the landscape framed inside it is the one the animal ruled: a volcano erupting at the back, mountain ridges beside it, pterosaurs crossing a storm-dark sky, and small dinosaurs on the plain below – there is even a tiny stegosaurus grazing on the grass ledge.

Six layers deep, it is the busiest scene in the dinosaur pair, and the small animals are the part children go looking for.

The upright one

At 13 × 14 cm this is the only kit in the range taller than it is wide. That changes how it stands: it takes up less shelf width than the others and sits comfortably beside books. Six layers of 4 mm plywood, a good two centimetres deep where they all overlap.

Painting the volcano

Red and yellow are the two colours this design will exhaust first, since the eruption and the sky both want them. Mix orange rather than laying red beside yellow, and keep the black for the storm clouds rather than outlining everything with it.

Paint each layer flat before gluing – the sky and the volcano sit at the back of the stack, out of a brush's reach once assembled. The layers are numbered, so the order is never in doubt, and the glue is a stick rather than a liquid, so it sets in minutes.

The other dinosaur in this range is the stegosaur – wider, calmer, with a pond instead of a volcano.
