About this product
A jungle behind the plates
The stegosaur stands in profile, and the back plates are cut in stepped layers, so they stand clear of each other with shadow between them. Behind the animal the layers open onto its world: a pond with a long-necked sauropod standing in it, a triceratops on the rocks, a pterosaur overhead, palms and broad leaves against the sky.
That gives a child three more dinosaurs to find after the first one, and three more things to decide a colour for.
Where the depth comes from
Five layers, glued in sequence. The jungle sits furthest back, the pond and the animals in the middle, the plates and the head at the front, and the shadows between the layers do most of the work of making the scene read as three-dimensional. Where all five layers overlap, the piece builds up to about two centimetres thick.
At 18 × 11 cm this is one of the two widest kits in the range, alongside the lion.
Before you start
Paint each layer flat first – that is what the box means by "paint every layer": once the stack is glued, the pond and the jungle sit behind windows a brush cannot properly reach. Keep paint off the faces where the layers meet, so the glue stick grips bare wood, and touch up the edges at the end.
Six colours are supplied: black, white, red, yellow, blue and green. A jungle uses most of the green, so mix rather than spend it early.
The other dinosaur in this range is the T-rex – the upright one, with the volcano.
