A world map in pale wood on a black board

The darkest board in the range, stained almost black, with the continents lasered out of the stain so that they show as pale, bare birch. The grain runs unbroken from the black ocean into the cream land, because it is one sheet of plywood: the map is not painted on and not inlaid, it is the wood itself showing through where the laser has been.

It is the strongest contrast we put on a notebook cover, and the only design in the range drawn in light on dark rather than dark on light.

Leather spine, strap and stud

Two birch boards joined by a black leather strip riveted along the edge, six silver rivets on the front, and a leather strap that closes across the front edge on a stud. The notebook shuts and stays shut, which a bare ring binding does not, so nothing catches and nothing falls open in a bag. Inside, a four-ring mechanism holds the block between black card leaves: a page lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full.

Who it is for

The traveller who writes, and anyone who already has a wooden world map on the wall: same subject, same wood, at a size that goes in a bag. The date line and weekday boxes at the top of every page were made for a travel diary that dates itself.

Paper and format

100 lined sheets of 80 g/m² paper, each page headed with a date line and the days of the week; pencil, ballpoint and fineliner. A5, about 18.5 × 22 cm closed and 4 cm thick, about 650 g – the heaviest notebook in the range, because of the leather and the second board.
