About this product

A crescent hung with charms

Deep grey-brown birch with a crescent moon engraved left of centre, opening to the right, its face textured and its rim decorated like a band of jewellery. To the right of it a large eight-pointed star and a scatter of small ones; from its lower horn hang chains and garlands of charms – crystals, a pendant, a cut gem at the very bottom. The crescent is the burnt part, a dark moon on a dark sky; the stars and chains are drawn in fine line.

It is the same crescent as our Moon sketchbook, which carries blank drawing paper; this one carries lined pages.

Where the design sits

Moon left of centre, stars up and to the right, charms trailing below: the design runs the full height of the cover on a slight diagonal, which gives it a direction a centred motif would not have. It is the notebook for a bedside table: dream records, a few lines before sleep, and every page already carries the date line for it.

How it is built

A one-piece birch cover scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, it reads as a solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism holds the block between black card leaves: a page lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full.

Paper and format

100 lined sheets of 80 g/m² paper, each page headed with a date line and the days of the week; pencil, ballpoint and fineliner. A5, about 18.5 × 22 cm closed and 4 cm thick, about 590 g.
