About this product
Nothing on the cover but the word
Warm brown birch, the word SKETCHBOOK engraved in a small box at the top left, and no design of any kind. Of all our sketchbooks it is the only one where the wood itself is the whole front.
What you look at instead of a picture is grain: figured birch running the height of the cover, different on every copy, because no two sheets of plywood are alike.
Why plain is a choice
An engraved cover announces what the book is for before it opens – a dragon says one thing, a compass another. This one says nothing, which is what you want when the contents will be varied, or when the book is going to someone whose subject you cannot guess.
It is also the one to buy again. A shelf of plain covers reads as a set; a shelf of different engravings reads as a collection.
How it is built
The cover is a single sheet of birch plywood, scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, the book reads as one solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism is screwed to the cover – the two screw heads show on the back, beside our CREATIF mark – and holds the block behind a black card leaf. The rings open, so a finished drawing lifts out cleanly and a new block goes in when this one is full.
Because the cover is a board, it gets used where a pad does not: on a knee, against a wall, standing in front of the thing being drawn.
Paper and format
50 blank sheets of 200 g/m² watercolour paper – heavy enough to take a wash without cockling, so it works for travel painting as well as pencil and ink. 18.5 × 22 × 4 cm closed, a little over half a kilo. The same plain cover with lined pages is the plain wooden notebook.
