About this product

A dragon in flight on the palest wood

The lightest cover of our five – pale, almost unstained birch – with a dragon engraved in profile, head to the left, wings spread wide, smoke curling from its jaws, and the tail looping once below the body before it ends in a barb.

Because the wood is pale, the dark engraving has more contrast here than on any other cover we make, and the dragon reads from across a room.

Drawn in hatching, not filled

The scales are rows of short curved strokes, the wing membranes are hatched between the bones, the smoke is a few loose curls. The dragon is built from dense line rather than from solid burnt areas, so it reads as a pen drawing burnt into the surface, and it keeps its detail at this size where a filled silhouette would show only an outline.

How it is built

One sheet of birch plywood, scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, it reads as a solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism screwed to the cover – the two screw heads show on the back, beside our CREATIF mark – holds the block behind a black card leaf. The rings open: a finished drawing lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full. The cover is rigid enough to draw against with no table.

Paper and format

50 blank sheets of 200 g/m² watercolour paper, heavy enough to take a wash. 18.5 × 22 × 4 cm closed, a little over half a kilo. The same dragon with lined pages is the Dragon wooden notebook.
