About this product
A triskelion in a burst of rays
The darkest cover of our five, in grey-brown birch, with a Celtic triskelion at the centre – three spirals around a small triangle, knotwork between the arms – set in a raised disc, and around the disc a field of wavy, flame-like rays carved into the wood like a sunburst.
It is the one cover here that is carved rather than drawn. The rays are cut to depth and the disc stands proud of them, so the design catches light and throws shadow as the book is turned; every other design in the range sits on the surface.
What a triskelion is
Three linked spirals, one of the oldest motifs in European art. It is carved into the stones of Newgrange in Ireland, five thousand years old, long before the Celts, and today it is the emblem of Brittany, on flags, jerseys and shop signs from Brest to Nantes. It has been read as motion, as land, sea and sky, as past, present and future; what it meant to the people who first cut it, nobody knows.
Unlike the animals in this range it carries no single agreed meaning, which is part of why it works on a book someone will fill themselves.
How it is built
One sheet of birch plywood, scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, it reads as a solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism screwed to the cover – the two screw heads show on the back, beside our CREATIF mark – holds the block behind a black card leaf. The rings open: a finished drawing lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full.
Paper and format
50 blank sheets of 200 g/m² watercolour paper, heavy enough to take a wash. 18.5 × 22 × 4 cm closed, a little over half a kilo. The same carved triskelion with lined pages is the Triskel wooden notebook.
