About this product
A triskelion carved in a burst of rays
The darkest board in the range, deep grey-brown with the figure of the plywood showing strongly through the stain, and at its centre a Celtic triskelion – three spirals around a small triangle, knotwork between the arms – set in a raised disc, with a field of wavy, flame-like rays carved into the wood around it like a sunburst.
It is the one cover here that is carved rather than drawn. The rays are cut to depth and the disc stands proud of them, so the design catches light and throws shadow as the notebook is turned; every other design in the range sits on the surface.
What the triskelion is
The motif is carved into the stones of Newgrange in Ireland, around 3200 BC, which makes it older than Stonehenge and older than the pyramids. It recurs across Celtic and pre-Celtic Europe, and today it is the emblem of Brittany, on flags, jerseys and shop signs.
Its meaning is not fixed and never was. Three-part readings have been attached to it repeatedly – land, sea and sky; past, present and future – but those were laid on afterwards. What is certain is the age and the reach.
Who it suits
People with a connection to Brittany, Ireland or the Isle of Man, where the symbol is still in everyday use, and anyone who prefers a cover that says something without spelling it out. The same carved triskelion with blank watercolour paper is the Triskel sketchbook.
How it is built
The cover is a single sheet of birch plywood, scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, the notebook reads as one solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism is screwed to the cover – the two screw heads show on the back, beside our CREATIF mark – and holds the block between black card leaves. The rings open: a page lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full.
Paper and format
100 lined sheets of 90 g/m² paper, each page headed with a date line and the days of the week. It takes pencil, ballpoint and fineliner. 18.5 × 22 × 4 cm closed, a little over half a kilo.
