About this product
A unicorn framed by blossom
Mid-tone honey birch, a unicorn's head in profile facing right, the horn spiralling up from the brow, with flowering branches engraved into two opposite corners, upper left and lower right.
The mane is not hair. Every lock is filled with a different ornament – chevrons, scales, dots, spirals – the way a mandala or a zentangle drawing is built, and the eye and muzzle are drawn the same way. It is closer to the ornamental animals in our puzzle range than to anything pastel: the unicorn for someone who has grown out of the other kind.
The corners frame it
The blossom in the top left and bottom right holds the drawing in place on the board, so the head sits within a composition rather than floating in the middle of it.
Who it suits
Teenagers and adults rather than small children – the engraving is too fine and the palette too restrained for a child's eye. As a gift it works where a pastel unicorn would be received as a joke. The same unicorn with blank watercolour paper is the Unicorn sketchbook.
How it is built
The cover is a single sheet of birch plywood, scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, the notebook reads as one solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism is screwed to the cover – the two screw heads show on the back, beside our CREATIF mark – and holds the block between black card leaves. The rings open: a page lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full.
Paper and format
100 lined sheets of 90 g/m² paper, each page headed with a date line and the days of the week. It takes pencil, ballpoint and fineliner. 18.5 × 22 × 4 cm closed, a little over half a kilo.
