Gates that actually open
Two hundred and ninety-six pieces in three sections, with wide gates at the centre whose mechanism swings outward. It is the only set in the range with a moving part, and building it correctly is the point of the 10+ rating.
This was the structure through which a fortress was entered: the weakest point in any wall, and therefore the most heavily built.
Thirty-nine different piece types
More than any other set here, which is what makes the sorting stage matter. Where a house set has beams in three or four lengths, this one has pieces shaped specifically for the gate frame, the hinge housing and the arch above it.
The instructions draw each piece at actual size, so identifying them is a matter of laying a piece on the page rather than measuring it.
What else the booklet contains
Plans for a four-by-four and a tank, built from the same pieces. Neither has anything to do with a fortress, which is the point: they are there to show what the piece profile can do once the child stops following the intended model.
Specifications
Untreated hardwood, no varnish or paint. Part of the four-set Fortress series, between the Fortification walls at 8+ and the Castle at 12+, with the Tower as the entry point. Ships at 2.3 kg in a 37 × 30 × 8 cm box.
