About this product
Flowers in one corner
Warm mid-brown birch with a bouquet engraved in fine line in the lower right corner – peonies, a tulip on its stalk, buds, leaves and small berries – climbing partway up the right edge. The upper two thirds of the cover are plain wood with the grain running through it.
The same bouquet is on the four-ring Spring, on two open boards, and on the Spring sketchbook with blank watercolour paper. This is the version that closes into a solid block.
Why the empty space works
A cover that is mostly bare reads as restrained rather than unfinished, provided the drawing is fine enough to hold its own; this one is drawn at the density of a pen sketch. It is the quietest cover in the range and the one for a recipient whose taste you are unsure of. With most of the board plain, the figure in the plywood is as much of the appearance as the engraving, and no two covers are alike.
How it is built
A one-piece birch cover scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, it reads as a solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism holds the block between black card leaves: a page lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full.
Paper and format
100 lined sheets of 80 g/m² paper, each page headed with a date line and the days of the week; pencil, ballpoint and fineliner. A5, about 18.5 × 22 cm closed and 4 cm thick, about 550 g.
