3D Wooden World Map Chocolate
Honey and smoked brown alternating country by country – closer to marquetry than to a map
Choosing your map size
Every map is supplied as separate wooden pieces that you arrange on the wall yourself, so the size below is the space the finished map will occupy – not a box or a frame. Measure your wall first, then leave around 20 cm of clear space on each side so the map has room to breathe.

Framed panels
Mounted on a solid backing panel, ready to hang. No assembly, single piece.
| Model | Size | Dimensions | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| World map, Multicolor | S | 90 × 60 cm | 4.0 kg |
| World map, Multicolor | M | 110 × 80 cm | 5.0 kg |
| World map, Graphite | M | 110 × 80 cm | 5.0 kg |
| France wine map | — | 65 × 65 cm | 3.5 kg |
| Italy wine map | — | 58 × 65 cm | 3.0 kg |
Framed panels arrive assembled and are noticeably heavier than the piece-by-piece maps, since they include the backing panel.
Three steps before you order
- Measure the free wall. Width and height of the clear area, ignoring furniture that reaches less than 20 cm up the wall.
- Subtract the breathing room. Take off roughly 20 cm from each side. What remains is the largest map that will look comfortable there.
- Check the shape. All our world maps are wider than they are tall, roughly 3:2. A tall narrow wall will suit a smaller size than its height suggests.
Still unsure? Mark the outline on your wall with masking tape before ordering – it takes two minutes and settles the question.
Frequently asked
Is the size the map itself or the packaging?
The map. Boxes are much smaller, since the map ships as separate pieces.
Between two sizes – which should I take?
The larger one. The most common regret we hear is a map that looks smaller on the wall than it did in the box.
What if my wall is textured or painted?
The supplied tape holds on most smooth and lightly textured surfaces. On heavily textured walls, rough plaster or fresh paint (under three weeks old), the bond is weaker – write to us before ordering and we'll advise.
How much does it weigh on the wall?
Between 0.36 kg and 4.5 kg depending on size, spread across many separate pieces, so no single point carries much load. Framed panels are heavier and hang as one piece.

About this product
Two tones, alternating
Chocolate is the most restrained finish we make. Rather than distributing many shades across the map, it works with essentially two: a warm honey oak and a dark smoked brown, alternating from country to country. Poland light, Germany dark, Turkey light, Kazakhstan dark.
The result is closer to marquetry than to a painted map. It reads as inlaid woodwork, and the eye follows the alternation rather than looking for a colour it recognises.
Why the alternation matters
Because only two tones are in play, most borders are a full tonal switch rather than a gradual shift. Egypt against Sudan, Iran against Iraq – light against dark, the whole way round.
That gives this finish an unusual quality on a wall. From a distance it resolves into a pattern of interlocking light and dark shapes, and the fact that the shapes are countries becomes secondary. People notice it as a graphic object before they notice it is a map.
The deepest of the warm finishes, and what that asks of the room
Of the wood-toned finishes this sits deepest. Against white it produces a strong graphic contrast. Against dark green, navy or an exposed brick wall it settles in rather than competing, which the paler finishes cannot do.
What it will not tolerate is a busy background. The alternating pattern is itself a pattern, and wallpaper underneath turns both into visual noise.
Shadow on a dark ground
The continents are stacked from several plies, so the land stands off the wall and throws a shadow. Here that shadow falls onto surfaces that are already dark, which means the relief is carried by the tonal alternation rather than by the shadow itself.
Side lighting changes this map less than it changes the paler finishes. If your wall is evenly lit, this is the finish that suffers least from it.
Engraving, split between the two tones
Country names, borders, capitals, US states, Canadian provinces and Australian states are engraved individually. On the honey countries the lettering reads clearly at a distance. On the smoked ones it is quiet – visible when you are close, a texture rather than text from across the room.
Since the two tones alternate, the readable and the subtle names are interleaved across the whole map rather than clustered in one region.
English or French
The same map is engraved with all its lettering in either language, chosen above: country names, capitals, ocean names, states and provinces. Everything else is identical – the same plies, the same borders, the same accessories.
Think about who will read it rather than where it will hang. If the map is for someone who will stand in front of it and look for places, their own language is the one to choose; if it is chosen for the look, either works.
How it ages
A deep stain is more forgiving of dust than a pale one, but it shows fingerprints on the raised edges more readily. Handle the pieces by their faces during mounting rather than by the edges.
Keep it out of direct sun. On a two-tone finish uneven fading is particularly visible, because the gap between light and dark is the whole design: as the exposed side lightens, the alternation weakens on one part of the map and not the other.
Chocolate or Dark
The two are often compared. Dark spreads its tones across a wider range, from near-cream to walnut, so it stays legible as a map from a distance. Chocolate holds to two tones and reads as a single dark object with a pattern in it.
If you want a world map on the wall, Dark. If you want a piece of dark wooden wall art that happens to be a map, this one.
One honest limitation
This is a decorative object rather than a cartographic instrument. Small countries and island groups are simplified or omitted at this scale, and coastlines are smoothed. If you need geographic precision, a printed map serves better.
The same map, six ways
Chocolate is one of six finishes. Light is the palest, cream and straw under a clear coat; Amber is honey-gold and Dark a many-toned warm brown; Graphite leaves the wood tones for slate; and Multicolor mixes every stain in the workshop. The map underneath is the same – only the finish changes. Multicolor is also the only finish cut in a smaller fourth size, S.
Same wall, different room
Drag the slider – the only thing that changed is the map. No drill, no repainting: it mounts with the double-sided tape that comes in the box

Frequently asked questions
Will the map stick to a textured wall?
Taped maps hold on lightly textured walls; very rough surfaces need extra tape. Framed panels hang from the fixing on the back, whatever the wall
How long does installation take?
A few hours for a 3D map, a couple for a 2D one, an hour or two for a wooden wine map, with the included tape and the template or corner stencils – no tools needed. A framed panel needs none: one fixing, a few minutes. The full routine for every map is on our installation page.
Can I remove it and remount later?
Yes. Warm each piece with a hair dryer and peel it off gently – the wall stays clean. To remount, use fresh adhesive tape; the original tape won't hold a second time. A framed panel simply comes off its hook
What if a piece is missing or broken?
Write to us with a photo and we will send a replacement. Details are on our Missing Pieces page.
