Size guide

Choosing your map size

Every map is supplied as separate wooden pieces that you arrange on the wall yourself, so the size below is the space the finished map will occupy – not a box or a frame. Measure your wall first, then leave around 20 cm of clear space on each side so the map has room to breathe.

3D wooden world maps

Layered maps: continents stand proud of the wall and cast a real shadow.

M 100 × 70 cm 1.3 kg ~140 × 110 cm Above a console or a desk
L 150 × 105 cm 2.9 kg ~190 × 145 cm Above a sofa or a double bed
XL 200 × 140 cm 4.5 kg ~240 × 180 cm Feature wall, office, showroom

2D wooden world maps

S 80 × 55 cm 0.9 kg ~120 × 95 cm Desk wall, narrow corridor

Framed panels

Mounted on a solid backing panel, ready to hang. No assembly, single piece.

Model Size Dimensions Weight
World map, Multicolor S 90 × 60 cm 4.0 kg
World map, Multicolor M 110 × 80 cm 5.0 kg
World map, Graphite M 110 × 80 cm 5.0 kg
France wine map — 65 × 65 cm 3.5 kg
Italy wine map — 58 × 65 cm 3.0 kg

Framed panels arrive assembled and are noticeably heavier than the piece-by-piece maps, since they include the backing panel.

Three steps before you order

  1. Measure the free wall. Width and height of the clear area, ignoring furniture that reaches less than 20 cm up the wall.
  2. Subtract the breathing room. Take off roughly 20 cm from each side. What remains is the largest map that will look comfortable there.
  3. Check the shape. All our world maps are wider than they are tall, roughly 3:2. A tall narrow wall will suit a smaller size than its height suggests.

Still unsure? Mark the outline on your wall with masking tape before ordering – it takes two minutes and settles the question.

Frequently asked

Is the size the map itself or the packaging?
The map. Boxes are much smaller, since the map ships as separate pieces.

Between two sizes – which should I take?
The larger one. The most common regret we hear is a map that looks smaller on the wall than it did in the box.

What if my wall is textured or painted?
The supplied tape holds on most smooth and lightly textured surfaces. On heavily textured walls, rough plaster or fresh paint (under three weeks old), the bond is weaker – write to us before ordering and we'll advise.

How much does it weigh on the wall?
Between 0.36 kg and 4.5 kg depending on size, spread across many separate pieces, so no single point carries much load. Framed panels are heavier and hang as one piece.

About this product

Slate and stone rather than wood tones

Graphite is the finish that steps furthest from the wood tones. Slate, ash and near-black plies make up most of the map, with sand and copper countries scattered through as relief – Iran in pale sand, Japan in warm copper. Beside it, every other finish reads as warm.

The effect on a wall is closer to stone or metal than to timber. Where the Light finish announces that it is made of wood, this one hides it: at a distance the grain reads as texture rather than as material, and people tend to ask what it is made from before they ask where it came from.

Where the grey earns its place

It is the finish for rooms that already have a strong wood presence and cannot take more. Oak floors, walnut furniture, an exposed beam – a warm map in that setting competes, and this one does not. It also holds up against concrete, black steel and dark green paint, which the paler finishes disappear into.

Against a white wall it produces the sharpest contrast we offer, and that is worth knowing in both directions. The map will dominate the room rather than sit in it.

What the darkness does to the relief

Every 3D map casts its own shadow, since the continents are built from stacked plies rather than a single sheet. On the pale finishes that shadow is the main thing you see from across a room. Here it competes with the colour: a dark grey country against a dark grey shadow reads as one mass until you are close enough to see the step.

The compensation is that side lighting works harder on this finish than on any other. A lamp placed to one side rather than in front of it will separate the layers dramatically, and the map changes character between daylight and evening more than the paler versions do.

Engraving on a mixed ground

Country names, borders, capitals, US states, Canadian provinces and Australian states are engraved individually on every map we make. Here the sand and copper countries are the most legible on the board, the engraving burning dark against pale wood; the deepest grey plies ask for a step closer. Reading this map is a game of near and far, and the big sand countries are where a visitor starts.

English or French

The same map is engraved with all its lettering in either language, chosen above: country names, capitals, ocean names, states and provinces. Everything else is identical – the same plies, the same borders, the same accessories.

Think about who will read it rather than where it will hang. If the map is for someone who will stand in front of it and look for places, their own language is the one to choose; if it is chosen for the look, either works.

Ageing, and one thing to avoid

Dark surfaces show dust sooner than pale ones, particularly on the upper edges of each ply where it settles. A dry brush along the top of the continents once a month is enough.

Direct sunlight is the real risk. Every wooden finish shifts over years, but a dark stain fades unevenly and visibly: the exposed side lightens while the shaded side does not, and on a map that means Asia and Africa drifting apart in tone. Keep it off a wall that takes afternoon sun.

One honest limitation

This is a decorative object rather than a cartographic instrument. Small countries and island groups are simplified or omitted at this scale, and coastlines are smoothed. If you need geographic precision, a printed map serves better.

The same map, six ways

Graphite is one of six finishes of this map. Light is the palest, cream and straw under a clear coat; Amber is honey-gold and Dark a many-toned warm brown; Chocolate is the deepest of the warm family; and Multicolor mixes every stain in the workshop. The map underneath is the same – only the finish changes. Multicolor is also the only finish cut in a smaller fourth size, S.
