3D Wooden World Map Dark
Warm brown worked in many tones – calm from across the room, a mosaic up close
Choosing your map size
Every map is supplied as separate wooden pieces that you arrange on the wall yourself, so the size below is the space the finished map will occupy – not a box or a frame. Measure your wall first, then leave around 20 cm of clear space on each side so the map has room to breathe.

Framed panels
Mounted on a solid backing panel, ready to hang. No assembly, single piece.
| Model | Size | Dimensions | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| World map, Multicolor | S | 90 × 60 cm | 4.0 kg |
| World map, Multicolor | M | 110 × 80 cm | 5.0 kg |
| World map, Graphite | M | 110 × 80 cm | 5.0 kg |
| France wine map | — | 65 × 65 cm | 3.5 kg |
| Italy wine map | — | 58 × 65 cm | 3.0 kg |
Framed panels arrive assembled and are noticeably heavier than the piece-by-piece maps, since they include the backing panel.
Three steps before you order
- Measure the free wall. Width and height of the clear area, ignoring furniture that reaches less than 20 cm up the wall.
- Subtract the breathing room. Take off roughly 20 cm from each side. What remains is the largest map that will look comfortable there.
- Check the shape. All our world maps are wider than they are tall, roughly 3:2. A tall narrow wall will suit a smaller size than its height suggests.
Still unsure? Mark the outline on your wall with masking tape before ordering – it takes two minutes and settles the question.
Frequently asked
Is the size the map itself or the packaging?
The map. Boxes are much smaller, since the map ships as separate pieces.
Between two sizes – which should I take?
The larger one. The most common regret we hear is a map that looks smaller on the wall than it did in the box.
What if my wall is textured or painted?
The supplied tape holds on most smooth and lightly textured surfaces. On heavily textured walls, rough plaster or fresh paint (under three weeks old), the bond is weaker – write to us before ordering and we'll advise.
How much does it weigh on the wall?
Between 0.36 kg and 4.5 kg depending on size, spread across many separate pieces, so no single point carries much load. Framed panels are heavier and hang as one piece.

About this product
Warm brown, worked in many tones
Dark is not a single dark colour. The palette runs from pale cream through honey and tan into deep walnut, and the tones are distributed country by country rather than by region, so Germany sits pale against a walnut France and Algeria reads mid-brown beside a light Niger. Nothing repeats in a predictable pattern.
The overall impression from a few metres away is of a warm brown map. Up close it is a mosaic, and that is the finish's real character: it looks calm at a distance and detailed when you approach it.
Where the mid-tones do their work
The contrast between neighbouring countries is what carries this finish. On a very pale or very dark map the borders rely on the engraved line and the physical step between plies. Here the tonal difference does most of the work, so the political divisions are readable from further back than on the quieter finishes.
The trade-off is that it wants a plain wall. Against wallpaper, brick or a strongly coloured surface the internal variation competes with the background, and the mosaic effect turns into noise. White, cream, pale grey and soft green all work.
Shadow against a brown ground
The continents are stacked from several plies, so the land stands off the wall and casts a shadow. On this finish that shadow falls on a mid-brown surface rather than on cream, which softens it: the relief reads as depth rather than as a hard outline.
You notice it most where a light country sits beside a dark one. The step between them is doubled by the tonal change, and those edges catch the eye first when the map is lit from the side.
Engraving at mid-tone
Every country name, border, capital, US state, Canadian province and Australian state is engraved individually. The laser darkens the surface, so on the pale countries the lettering is crisp and on the walnut ones it is subtler – a shift in sheen more than in colour.
In practice you read the names on the light countries from across the room and lean in for the dark ones. That is a fair description of how the map is used rather than a flaw: nobody stands and reads a wall map end to end.
English or French
The same map is engraved with all its lettering in either language, chosen above: country names, capitals, ocean names, states and provinces. Everything else is identical – the same plies, the same borders, the same accessories.
Think about who will read it rather than where it will hang. If the map is for someone who will stand in front of it and look for places, their own language is the one to choose; if it is chosen for the look, either works.
How it ages
Multi-tone finishes hide gradual change better than uniform ones. As the wood warms slightly over years, all the tones shift together and the relationships between them stay intact, so the map looks the same age throughout.
Direct sun is still the thing to avoid, since it lightens unevenly and the pale countries reach their limit first. Away from a sunlit wall, and dusted dry rather than wiped, it holds its tone.
Choosing between Dark and Chocolate
These two are the closest pair in the range and worth separating before you order. Chocolate is deeper and quieter: the tones sit within a narrower band, and the map reads as a single dark object. Dark keeps more distance between its lightest and darkest countries, so it stays legible as a map from further away.
Put simply, Chocolate is the more furniture-like of the two, Dark the more map-like.
One honest limitation
This is a decorative object rather than a cartographic instrument. Small countries and island groups are simplified or omitted at this scale, and coastlines are smoothed. If you need geographic precision, a printed map serves better.
The same map, six ways
Dark is one of six finishes. Light is the palest, cream and straw under a clear coat; Amber is honey-gold; Chocolate is the deepest of the warm family; Graphite leaves the wood tones for slate; and Multicolor mixes every stain in the workshop. The map underneath is the same – only the finish changes. Multicolor is also the only finish cut in a smaller fourth size, S.

Frequently asked questions
Will the map stick to a textured wall?
Taped maps hold on lightly textured walls; very rough surfaces need extra tape. Framed panels hang from the fixing on the back, whatever the wall
How long does installation take?
A few hours for a 3D map, a couple for a 2D one, an hour or two for a wooden wine map, with the included tape and the template or corner stencils – no tools needed. A framed panel needs none: one fixing, a few minutes. The full routine for every map is on our installation page.
Can I remove it and remount later?
Yes. Warm each piece with a hair dryer and peel it off gently – the wall stays clean. To remount, use fresh adhesive tape; the original tape won't hold a second time. A framed panel simply comes off its hook
What if a piece is missing or broken?
Write to us with a photo and we will send a replacement. Details are on our Missing Pieces page.
