About this product

Mountains along the bottom, and sky

Warm brown birch in landscape format, with a mountain massif drawn in fine hatched line at the lower left, a smaller range behind it, two small clouds, and a line of conifers in silhouette running the whole width of the lower edge. Above that, nothing: the upper two thirds of the cover are bare wood, with only the word SKETCHBOOK engraved in the corner.

It is the sparest design in the range, and the one that reads as landscape rather than as illustration.

Why the empty sky matters

The trees are burnt dark, the rock is drawn in line, and everything above the ridge is untouched birch. That is what makes the mountains read as distance rather than as pattern: there is air above them, most of the cover's worth.

Who it suits

Anyone who will fill it with landscape. It is the sketchbook to take walking – wide pages for a wide view, and a wooden cover to press against when there is nowhere to sit. The other landscape cover in the range is the Wolf, with a leather spine and a strap, on drawing paper rather than watercolour.

Paper and format

A one-piece birch cover scored along the spine so that it bends like a hinge, with the block on rings inside: a page lies flat, a finished drawing lifts out, and a new block goes in when this one is full. 50 blank sheets of 200 g/m² watercolour paper, heavy enough to take a wash. Landscape A5, 22.5 × 16 × 4 cm closed, about 600 g.
