About this product
A lion burnt into dark wood
A deep grey-brown board with the grain showing through the stain, and a lion's head facing forward at the centre, engraved as areas of burnt surface rather than as outline: the mane and the shadows of the face dark, the muzzle, brow and eyes left as the pale wood between them. Close up it is a portrait; from across a room it is a dark shape with a face in it.
It is the bold one of our three lions. The leather-bound Lion draws the same head in fine outline; the four-ring Lion puts it in profile on a pale board.
Why the dark stain
Burnt engraving on pale wood reads as a sketch; on a board this dark it reads as tone, and the lion gains weight from it. It suits a desk with dark wood on it and stands out against pale surfaces rather than blending into them.
How it is built
A one-piece birch cover scored along the spine with a row of laser cuts so that it bends like a hinge; closed, it reads as a solid block of wood. Inside, a four-ring mechanism holds the block between black card leaves: a page lifts out cleanly, and a new block goes in when this one is full.
Paper and format
100 lined sheets of 80 g/m² paper, each page headed with a date line and the days of the week; pencil, ballpoint and fineliner. A5, about 18.5 × 22 cm closed and 4 cm thick, about 560 g.
